"Space, Place, and Context" Back to Selma. And back to the building that keeps bringing me back to Selma. Five days into my 3rd visit since August. I keep asking myself "What am I doing here?" What's the role of an urban planner in a community that is not their own? Preserving history? Helping to prevent cultural erasure? Throwing around terms like community development, creative placemaking, racial justice, and technical assistance? So far, it's mostly listening. Hearing sentiments like "History is a stepping stone to the past" "If the building's gone, the history will be gone" "People come here to study us and don't leave anything behind."
